I take the tattoo seriously. I do not believe I have to take myself seriously every minute of the day.
I sometimes call the job Ink Architecture: part drawing, part construction, part problem-solving. A good tattoo artist also has to think like a tattoo engineer—working around anatomy, movement, material, scale and time.
Art came first. Comics and digital animation eventually led to tattooing, and after getting a first tattoo at fifteen, the direction became clear. I began my apprenticeship at eighteen at A Lasting Image and was working professionally by nineteen.
What experience really teaches is judgment. The client brings the idea. My job is to help decide what will translate, what needs to change, what the skin and placement will tolerate, and what gives the tattoo the best chance of staying readable for years to come.
Every tattoo has one. Detail needs enough physical space to breathe. When too much information is forced into too little skin, the fresh tattoo may photograph well while the long-term tattoo becomes less stable and less readable.
Placement, anatomy, movement, skin, existing work, future work and healing all affect the plan. A good reference image is a starting point, not a guarantee that the exact same result belongs on every body.
I am interested in the healed tattoo and the aged tattoo, not only the photograph taken five minutes after completion. Planning, application, aftercare and scale all contribute to how the work holds up.
Usually describes a visual approach using finer line weights—not a promise that every tiny design can be packed with unlimited detail. Line weight, spacing, placement and scale still need to support long-term readability.
Small is a size. Detail is information. Those are not the same thing. The smaller the tattoo becomes, the more carefully the amount of detail has to be edited.
Realism is not simply “make it look exactly like the photo.” Contrast, value structure, placement, available size and what the skin can actually hold are part of creating a believable result.
A cover-up is a design problem with existing information already in the skin. It usually requires compromise in size, darkness, placement, subject matter—or some combination of all four.
A touch-up is not a universal reset button. Healing, location, aftercare, skin behavior and the age of the tattoo all matter when deciding whether additional work is appropriate.
I like clients to understand what is happening and why. I also like the room to feel human. Tattooing can be intimidating enough without pretending every conversation has to sound like an art-school dissertation. We can talk design, skin and longevity—and still laugh at dumb stuff while we do it.
